With the information about COVID-19 developing, our goal is to aid in the prevention of spreading this virus to the best of our ability. As part of this effort, all Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month activities including the Bee Creative Literacy Contest will be postponed until further notice. We will continue to monitor the recommendations of our health care agencies. Thank you to our volunteers, teachers and students that show such an interest in agriculture education. AITC-NL is wishing you all health and safety during this time!

Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month

Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) organizations from across Canada worked collectively with other organizations on an initiative to declare March the Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month (CALM). This program will encourage Elementary students to learn about and celebrate agriculture through various activities such as reading books about farming, watching videos, and meeting with agricultural representatives.

Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month is one of many of the outreach programs supported by AITC-Canada

If you are a Teacher (K-6) and you would like to participate in CALM and have a presenter come to your classroom to share information about agriculture, please send a registration form to Chelsea Foley (chelsea@nlfa.ca):

“BEE Creative” Literacy Contest

Agriculture in the Classroom NL has partnered with the NL Beekeeping Association and NL Eggs to give students all across Newfoundland and Labrador a chance to win a bee-hive in their school’s name.

Classes can submit three of their top literary works that combines the student’s literacy talent with their knowledge of agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador (ex: poem, comic, story, etc). Contest runs March 1st to March 31st, 2020. The winners will be announced Friday, April 10th, 2020.

The winning classes get the opportunity to decorate the beehive anyway that they choose (school mascot, colors, etc.) Then, the beehive will be returned to the participating Beekeepers farm where it will be taken care of in the name of your school.

Hive updates will be provided by AITC NL.

All contest entries can be submitted by tagging @aitcnl , and @EMF_Rodney via twitter with the hashtag #CALM20. All entries must be submitted by March 31st, 2020.
